Types of Wave (Please spend about 10 minutes on this section)

You have produced a wave on slinky coil by vibrating it in a particular direction. Notice how the wave you produced propagates from one end of the coil to the another? Click on the video below to see in greater details.


From the video, waves can be categorised into two types:
  • transverse wave such as water waves and light waves.
  • longitudinal wave such as sound waves.

At this moment, we would ask you to observe a simulation as shown below.

Instructions:
  1. Select transverse wave and then click Start button. Pay attention to the direction of how the light blue object is vibrating when a wave is propagating through it. 
  2. Next, select longitudinal wave and then click Start button. Pay attention to to the direction how the light blue object is vibrating when a wave is propagating through it.  

Compare the direction of the moving light blue object for transverse wave and longitudinal wave.
